Beautiful Feet, Steady Hearts

Romans 9:30-10:17

When Paul the Apostle wrote his letter in the Epistle to the Romans, he spoke of a stone in the road, a stone many stumbled over. That stone, of course, is Jesus Christ.

And truth be told, human nature hasn’t changed much since Paul first dipped his quill in ink. The same stone still lies in the road today, and plenty of folks still stub their toes on it.

Some trust their morality more than the Savior, hoping that being a “good person” will open heaven’s gate. Others lean on religious activity, church attendance, volunteering, and family tradition, treating these things as if they could carry the weight of salvation. Some compare themselves to others and shrug, “Well, at least I’m not as bad as…” Others try to balance the scales, piling good deeds high enough to tip the measure in their favor. And many cling to pride, resisting the humbling truth that salvation must be received the way a beggar receives bread.

In the end, it’s all the same effort: trying to earn what God only gives.

But Scripture pulls the ladder out from under every one of those attempts. Righteousness is not something we construct with careful effort or moral polish. It is credited. Not achieved by sweat, but received by faith.

And here is where Paul turns our eyes to something remarkable about God’s plan. The Lord who saves His people has also chosen the way they will hear the good news. Paul asks a string of questions that climb like steps up a hillside: How will they call on Him if they have not believed? How will they believe if they have not heard? And how will they hear without someone preaching?

Then comes the clear and steady truth: “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

God writes the harvest into His plan, but He also sends the farmers into the field.

What grace that the Lord would use ordinary people to carry an eternal message. He could have written the gospel across the sky or carved it into the mountains, but instead He places it into human voices and sends it walking through the world. Conversations over coffee, a Bible opened at a kitchen table, a quiet testimony shared in love, these simple moments become holy ground.

Paul even borrows the words of the prophets to describe it: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”

Not because the feet themselves are impressive, but because they carry the message that gives life.

And that truth stirs something deep within us. Someone once carried this message to us. Every believer stands downstream from another person’s faithfulness, someone who spoke the gospel, someone who opened the Word, someone who pointed us toward Christ.

So we speak, too.

Not with pressure or pride, but with quiet confidence. We tell the story of the cross. We point thirsty hearts toward living water. We scatter the seed of the Word and trust the Spirit to do what only He can do.

And somewhere, often when we least expect it, faith begins to grow where the gospel has been planted.

The Lord writes the names in the Book of Life. But He sends His people down the dusty roads of the world carrying good news.

So lay down your bricks, friend. Stop building towers to heaven. The foundation has already been laid—steady as bedrock, merciful as the morning light.

That foundation is Jesus Christ.

Those who trust Him stand secure.
Those who keep trying to climb their own ladders will find they never quite reach the clouds.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the mercy You have shown us in Jesus Christ. Thank You that faith comes through hearing Your Word. Give us willing hearts and courageous voices to share the gospel with those around us. Use our simple words to point others to Your saving grace. And remind us that while the harvest belongs to You, it is a joy and privilege to walk the fields with You. Amen.
